How to Install a Barrel Door Bolt Install the barrel bolt at a height that is easily reachable. A typical placement is one or two feet above the knob, but it can be lower. Retract the barrel and place the barrel guide on the inside of the door with its edge flush with the edge of the door. Level the guide with a torpedo level. Align the barrel and screw it to the door with a screwdriver. Close the door and extend the barrel past the edge of the door. Mark its position, then retract it and position the catch, extend the barrel and adjust the catch so that the barrel slides smoothly into it, drive screws into the hole. Required Tools. Torpedo level Pencil Screwdriver Tip : If the door has casing that prevents the edge of the door from being flush with the wall, you may have to chisel out a section of the casing wide enough for the barrel catch.
